Welcome to the Chocolate Festival

Britain’s Best Drinking Chocolate Award

Britain's Best Drinking Chocolate Award

Sorry voting has now closed

We are looking for your favourite drinking chocolate!

It’s really simple – there are three ways you can nominate your brand of choice:

1. Leave a comment at the bottom of this page

2. Tweet about it and CC us @TheChocFestival ** (#bestdrinkingchoc)

3. Leave a comment on our Facebook page The Chocolate Festival

Win drinking chocolate supply for a whole year!

One of you will win a year’s supply of drinking chocolate from some of the nominated brands. All you have to do is get nominating! And since we know there is more than just one great brand – you can nominate up to three brands and triple your chances of winning! (The winner will be chosen at random out of all the entries).

How did this come about?

There’s never a time when my kitchen cupboard doesn’t contain at least three or four different drinking chocolate varieties. As I don’t drink much coffee I NEED hot chocolate to function and get me through my busy days. I am always on the hunt for the best of this magical powder.

So you can imagine my enthusiasm when Tatiana, our Club-Chocolate E-zine and website editor, suggested we hold this award.

We thought long and hard who should be the judge and finally realized there’s no one better to ask then you guys!!!

The award winner

The winner of Britain’s Best Drinking Chocolate will be announced during The Chocolate Festival this December.

P.S. If you are a brand

If you produce and sell your own drinking chocolate – why not ask your followers to nominate and vote for you? Some of our favourite brands are already scoring high by doing just that!

  1. Dee Dmonte

Zotter Chocolate #bestdrinkingchoc gets my vote :) @WISHGIRL123

  2. My favourite hot chocolate has not come from any posh brand but from the cocoa producers of the Caribbean who make cocoa into little bars or balls and you have to grate them, add spices and boil to extract the goodness! Perfection!!
But the brand that comes closest has to be Valrhona, this is great stuff!

    • Georgette

I agree! Caribbean cocoa balls are intense in flavour, they’re the real deal!! My parents used to bring them back from Jamaica. I shall try Valrhona. Thanks!

  3. I confess not to making hot chocolate very often at home, though when I do, I simply use a good quality dark chocolate, eating quality, and grate/ melt into milk. Or top quality cocoa powder, I guess.

  4. Kate Cunningham

Zotter Chocolate #bestdrinkingchoc is my favourite so gets my vote
    @01592_katie

  9. Donna Sadler

Green And Blacks! It’s just Indulgence in abundance!! xxx

  10. matthew

Not a regular Hot chocolate drinker but Whitards 70% cocoa takes some beating

  11. Paul Wright

    Green & Blacks

  12. Josie Price

The new Clipper one is pretty yummy as is good old Green and Blacks. However, when i’m feeling really indulgent I make own homemade version that I think takes some beating :-)

  13. Well if i have time i would actually go the extra mile and melt the chocolate, and i would only use the Divine Chocolate, during the day i then warm it up, i know it seems long but definitely worth it.
If i go for instant then it’s Cameo Ciobar if i can find it or Green & Black’s.

  14. MAZZ MULLARKEY

    Zotter Chocolate #bestdrinkingchoc is wonderful,
I’m also a fan of Tassimo Milka Hazelnut hot chocolate too.x

My absolute favourite hot chocolate is made by Pierre Herme with raspberry and made the continental way with hot water and no milk. Orgasmic!

  30. Lucinda

Charbonel & Walker chocolate flakes – yummy!

  31. Jenny

William Curley’s Spiced Hot Chocolate is pretty amazing. If I was going for a drinking chocolate, that would probably be it.

That said, left to myself, I like cocoa best, with just 100% cocoa powder (usually Green & Blacks) and milk, no sugar.

  32. It has to be this beauty http://www.touchofeurope.net/21365/Poulain+Grand+Arome+Hot+Chocolate+Mix+500g.html – Poulain Grand Arome Hot Chocolate – I buy it every year when I’m over in France. Reminds me of summer holidays when I was younger too!

  33. Ashley Kay

favourite drinking chocolate? Montezuma’s. Especially ‘No.2′ with chilli. Just the right amount of kick!

  34. MANU

    Hi,
Theobroma Cacao in Chiswick make Hot chocolate from heaven!!

  35. Zed

Hmm…this is quite difficult because I’m not quite sure what brands coffee shops use, but in terms of what I have at home, it’s always Cadbury’s Hot Chocolate, plain and simple..

  36. Liam Hennessy

    Clipper

  37. Zana

Melange Chocolate in Peckham makes amazing hot chocolates, I think I tried them all.

  39. Daisybeebee

Montezumas gets my vote , delicious. Have tweeted x

  40. Hope you wont mind a bit of self-promotion! But we are a small family run business based in York,UK who manufacture fairtrade chocolate family treats!

Our business was created to launch our very first product which was a Hot-Chocolate on Stick designed to be stirred into hot milk or Soya milk. We created it so solve the problem of family members with lactose intolerance who love hot chocolate! We also sell bags of fairtrade Cocoa! Thanks and best of luck to all the nominees!

  41. We vote for the original and the best Hans Sloane milk chocolate drink the recipe was devised by him and brought to London from Jamaica in 1689 where it was used for medicinal purposes. Approximately 250 years later it was purchased by the Cadbury brothers and this recipe is still used today how’s that for longevity? Can anyone else beat this historical record if so we would like to hear from them before our Killyleagh Hans Sloane Chocolate Festival 21st – 23rd September 2012?

  42. Cadbury’s drinking chocolate gets our vote, as wonderful today as it was when Hans Sloane invented it in 1692. Visit our website @ http://www.hanssloane.com or follow Sloane350 on Twitter

  43. Gaj

My vote goes to Devnaa which has a special blend of cinnamon, cardamom, clove, ginger, nutmeg and Belgian chocolate. Hot chocolate with a bit of spice!

  44. Zotter, most definitely.

  59. Andrew Fearne

  74. Julia Marriott

Mortimer’s Chocolate powder! Any variety makes fantastic hot chocolate, chocolate sauce or sprinkled onto hot toast for instant chocolate spread. Hot chocolate fantastic in cow’s milk or in Oatmilk for a great thick dairy/soya free version. Particularly good with cardamom, cinammon, chilli or a drop of something naughty added. On that note, will go and make some…

  75. Gill

What a choice! Not Green & Black’s because they are no longer dairy free. The Mortimer chocolate company make gorgeous pure chocolate powder in dark and *dairy-free white*, and the chocolate powder is so wonderful it just gets eaten straight out of the packet; the powder magically turns to molten chocolate in your mouth – how nommy is that?! That said, I also enjoy Montezuma’s, Hotel Chocolat and Valrhona. But Mortimer is no. 1 just for the white chocolate powder which is pure luxury.

  76. mortimer do a nice range of drinking chocolate and makes an excellent scrumptious brownie which does not last long in our house.Try mortimer drinking chocolate with marshmallows, yumm!!

  77. Limor

Paul A young spiced hot chocolate

  78. Mortimer chocolate company! I love this brand, the hot chocolate and all their recipes!!!

  79. Simon

As someone who receives a large selection of homemade delights based on the Mortimer website, I give them a 10 out of 10 and another +1 for being amazing.

The ginger log, mousse, whiskey cake (leave for 2 days for extra amazing taste) and the fondue make dessert the new thing!

  80. Rebecca

Without a doubt the best ‘proper’ drinking chocolate is based in our village! Mortimer Chocolate – once tried never forgotten.

  81. Chris the Chocolate Boy

Having spent 30 years working in Chocolate I have tasted a few!

In my experience making a mug of hot chocolate/drinking chocolate is a labour of love. Get the right product and wow – sit back, relax and enjoy.

I could slag off many but praise is a rare commodity however for pure quality and indulgence the choice of best is easy:

    MORTIMER WEST AFRICAN HOT CHOCOLATE

    time after time after time

Of course it is REAL CHOCOLATE – pure and simple

Not some cheap imitation mixture of fat reduced cocoa powder, whey powder, fat powders, thickeners and sweeteners – you know who you are….

Keep up the good work Mortimer Chocolate Company.

  82. Pete from Halifax the chocolate lover!!

Second best in anything won’t do for me , So Mortimer chocolate’s products are always worth sourcing to meet this criteria .
